| The company was originally started in 1901 by Frederick W. Kewell (the great grandfather of the current President William H Kewell III) in San Francisco, California, as Western Paper Box Company. It consisted of a single box manufacturing plant. In 1912, Frederick Kewell expanded into southern California with the purchase of LA Paper Box Factory. Both Western Paper Box and LA Paper Box Factory continued to be operated as separate entities although both were owned and operated by the Kewell family members.
The board mill was purchased in 1941 and at that time LA Paper Box Factory was incorporated under the name of Los Angeles Paper Box and Board Mills. In 1983, Schulken Brothers Paperstock Company was merged into Los Angeles Paper Box and Board Mills to complete the four divisions that are in operation today.
In 1991, Los Angeles Paper Box purchased the operating assets of Western Paper Box Company and relocated the entire operation to Los Angeles in 1994.
